A few years ago, before I created The Literacy Sphere…
I was a struggling part-time phonics teacher with a big dream to dominate the Elocution Industry.
And in December 2020, I woke up one morning and called a lawyer and told her I wanted to set up my business.
I incorporated The Literacy Sphere Education Services and faced great challenges that almost made me quit…
I wasn’t making a dime.
Until I found a life-changing strategy that helped me to successfully grow my brand into a profitable highly efficient business that is changing lives.
I remember how it all started.
I just graduated from FUTO with a second upper after studying Agric Economics.
But I didn’t know what to do next with my degree.
Was I supposed to end up as a market woman or a rich farmer’s secretary?
Or possibly become a market analyst and give 15-minute talks on early morning news programmes, lamenting about the inflation and rising cost of food products?
But, thanks to God…
I happened to get posted to a school for my National Youth Service, and there, I discovered my love for teaching.
So after my youth service, I decided to pursue a career as a teacher.
I got a job opportunity to work as a classroom teacher and I went for it.
I took some training courses in teaching, some certification courses in the use of the British curriculum and the Nigerian curriculum, handwriting, and phonics.
Later, in order to give more time to evangelism, which I love very much, I resigned from full-time teaching and worked as a part-time phonics instructor in the same school, focusing on teaching children how to read.
It was a modest, once-a-week position which I loved.
I cherished teaching the children and sharing my love for the English language.
I loved to be around children and I’m passionate about their development.
Being an English teacher just went well with me.
And things will begin to change rapidly from here because of a new part-time teacher who was introduced to the school; she was the diction teacher. Let’s call her Sylvia.
She taught pronunciation, intonation and all that has to do with speaking clearly.
While I only taught the children how to read… Well, I still shared so much more with the children, because I love to teach.
Everyone admired Sylvia’s way of speaking, especially the children.
Her captivating way of speaking made her appealing to them.
They appreciated her intonation and were irresistibly drawn to her.
Their excitement when she entered the room was palpable…
The children would eagerly try to mimic her speech, and make efforts to speak correctly in her presence.
I just admired the whole setup and realised that she commanded a lot of attention.
Well, I did command attention compared to the regular teachers they saw every day…
However, Sylvia commanded a lot more attention when she came around the school, and I was drawn to her.
I thought to myself, “I would love to be like Sylvia.”
And I deeply meant it.
I started dreaming big.
I could see myself on a big stage, speaking at events and hosting seminars.
I wanted to build my own brand, one that everyone would recognise and trust.
But I was still an average Phonics teacher who couldn’t teach children diction, because I hadn’t gained mastery of the subject. That’s because my job didn’t require me to.
However, since I wanted more…
I decided to sign up for a 2-month programme to pursue my dream of becoming an elocutionist. I attended physical classes twice a week for two months. Afterwards, I served the organisation as an unpaid intern for 3 months.
Whenever I had some leisure time, I would go online searching for people who were elocutionists.
And feast on their page, watch their videos and posts.
In one of those posts, I learned about a general meeting by the Association of Diction Coaches of Nigeria (ADCN).
Then they didn’t have an official name.
They were just Diction Coaches of Nigeria.
When I attended the meeting, I met some diction coaches whom I used to see online.
I was starstruck; I struggled to get pictures with each of them.
And throughout the meeting, I couldn’t speak. I felt too small to speak. I just listened and took in everything.
I made myself a silent promise: ‘I’ll become a household name and get to the point where…
My name or brand would come up if anyone was to list five top diction coaches in Nigeria.’
I enrolled in several other elocution programmes, while still working as a part-time teacher until 2019…
When I was forced to start teaching online.
Back then, whenever I saw videos of diction coaches teaching online…
I would pick out errors in their teaching and in the way they pronounced their words.
Because I had been thoroughly trained, and I had honed my skills, I could identify who wasn’t getting it right.
Therefore, I would brutally criticise their videos…
‘Look at this lady. She’s not speaking right. She’s not pronouncing her words well but look at all the people applauding her.’ I would complain to myself.
This went on for months until I decided to speak to myself. I said to myself,
Girl, if you want to make a change, go out there and teach. You can’t sit in your kitchen and find faults in people’s teaching when you’re making no effort to share your knowledge online.
And that was what propelled me to go out there and start teaching… I just wanted to share my knowledge and enlighten people.
I must say, it felt really good teaching online.
It reignited my dream; the dream of standing before an audience, their eyes locked on me, captivated by every word I speak.
I began to reimagine myself having viral videos.
And on stage delivering powerful speeches that leave a lasting impact.
My dream was getting clearer.
I now have my own diction page across social media with a few thousand followers… just like the ones I used to admire back then, when I was just starting out.
In my heart, I know I’m meant for more than just the classroom.
I’m meant to stand on the biggest stages, to reach wider audiences online, to be a voice that people admire.
And In December 2020, I woke up one morning and called a lawyer and told her I wanted to set up my business.
It was time to activate my dream.
The night before, I barely slept; I thought about what to name my business.
I thought about “The Literacy Circle” but I thought the word “circle” was a bit too common and ubiquitous.
I decided to use ‘sphere.’
I chose the word The Literacy Sphere’ because I believed that my organisation would address everything that has to do with literacy; it would go beyond elocution.
And because I was a phonics and writing expert, we would teach reading, writing, grammar, calligraphy and even speech therapy.
I sent the lawyer the details for the business incorporation, and on January 15, 2020…
The Literacy Sphere Education Services was born!
I continued to do what I was doing online. I taught, not for money, but for passion.
And I felt good because ever since I began sharing my knowledge of English pronunciation, intonation and grammar with people…
I received a massive welcome by the online community.
The reception I got when I started sharing my knowledge was extremely encouraging and that was what motivated me to continue.
When I started sharing my knowledge online, I never had the intention of making money…
I was solely driven by passion.
I made no single penny teaching online, despite the long and strenuous hours spent on content creation.
I didn’t care, though; I was content with just sharing my knowledge, and seeing how positively it impacted my followers.
By then, I had become a part-time diction instructor in another school, while still working as a part-time phonics instructor in my first school. I earned a modest remuneration from both jobs.
I reached a turning point the day I stumbled on an Instagram ad where the marketing coach talked about….
The No. 1 mistake online coaches make that can wipe many out of business.
Many believe that mastering your skills as an elocutionist will naturally attract clients.
However, that’s often not the case.
And it’s the main reason why a lot of highly competent elocutionists and coaches struggle.
It is crucial to understand that being an elocutionist or coach involves more than just perfecting your craft…

To succeed, you must actively promote yourself and showcase your expertise.
It’s beyond speaking right.

Getting a lot of sales is good. Especially when it’s a course.
I found myself running in a rat race and it was brutal.
I got myself a job I never signed up for.
Because for every client I enrolled into my programme, I had to give my time.
Both my personal life and family time suffered greatly.
I remember the period when I held classes for children from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. Afterwards, I would teach the adults from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
And it all became clear to me that I was in a trap. I was forced to limit my coaching business to 15 people max…
Because if I accepted more people, I wouldn’t be able to deliver at all. And my family would suffer more.
And the day I crossed my 15 students limit to 20+, I had to split the class.
Then I handled several classes from 3:45 p.m. to almost 9:00 p.m., working late into the night.
And my life became much tougher.
But I almost failed to scale my coaching programme. And it was so bad that I almost quit.
I was always on my phone and my laptop.
I had to take courses at night and create content in the middle of the night.
I’ll try to make a video in my sitting room, and later in my dining room.
Creating content was tough. But thankfully, people accepted my content…
However, there were still many bad days when I worked hard to create content and worked late into the night…
Most times till 3 a.m.… only to get very poor engagement.
So I learned another hard lesson about running my elocution business.
No one should run a “one-man squad” business.
Because my business almost became a plague to me, my health and my family.
It was impossible to scale the business because, for every dime I made, I had to sacrifice many hours of my life and family time.
It was a money trap.
A rat race.
And I had to find a way out or eventually quit the business.
A good business is not supposed to be run by one person. You must build your team from scratch.
And I successfully did.
Although it wasn’t easy because I had to figure it all out on my own… Without a single guidance or support from anyone.
It took me years to get my system crafted till it’s so efficient that anyone can replicate it in their business.
I started as an ordinary part-time phonics teacher and built my own elocution business online from scratch to success.
I grew from working in my dining room to having my fully-equipped office in a quiet and serene environment in Lagos.
Today, I’ve built my own high-network team.

- What is the programme about?
The Enterprising Elocutionist Programme (TEEP) is a comprehensive coaching programme for diction coaches and educators who desire to become world-class elocutionists able to run a successful online coaching business.
- Can you give me a glimpse of what the programme looks like on the inside?
Every student will first gain access to The Journey to Eloquence Coaching Programme, which is a 8-week coaching programme, designed to transform the average adult student into a refined speaker, and groom educators and elocutionists to become confident and self-assured coaches.
Zoom sessions are held twice a week. After each session, you’ll receive specific tasks to complete. Your dedicated personal coach will review your tasks and provide feedback to help you improve.
We will make you go through this programme to make you fit to join our team once there’s an opening or to help us confidently recommend you to other reputable organisations who might need your services. Additionally, you will learn how to structure a coaching programme for adults.
The next class is scheduled for October/November 2024. However, as soon as you sign up, you will be granted access to the Distinct Kids Club, where you can start your internship and your journey to becoming an enterprising online coach.
You will gain access to our highly effective scheme of work both for children and adult classes.
